Storms in the UK are no joke. Only a few days in to 2026 and Storm Goretti brought red weather warnings with heavy snow, wind and power cuts all forecast.
This is the fourth named storm of the 2025-2026 storm season (so far), following in the footsteps of Amy, Benjamin, Claudia and Bram. With storm seasons running from August to September the following year, it seems likely that we'll reach the tally of six named storms from 2024-2025.
But we remain some way off the destruction caused by the 12 names storms which impacted the UK in 2023-2024, which is the most in a season since naming began back in 2015.

Naming storms isn’t just for dramatic effect (though it helps!). In the UK, a storm is named when it’s expected to cause medium or high impacts, particularly in terms of strong winds, heavy rain, or snow.
This alphabetical naming convention alternates between male and female names, though it doesn’t strictly follow the rules every year. The goal? To ensure clarity and public awareness when the weather takes a turn for the worse.
